Dan Olincy
Former Trustee, Advisory Board Member
Dan Olincy’s legal career has been one of outstanding achievement and public service. He commenced his legal career in 1953 after receiving a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford University. He entered the United States Army and served for three years in the taxation section of the Office of the Judge Advocate General at the Pentagon. Since that time, Dan was actively engaged in the practice of law in Los Angeles where he practiced in the family partnership of Olincy & Olincy.
Dan’s many years of dedicated service in the field of taxation law has resulted in contribution to the development of taxation in the State of California. In his early years of practice, he was among the pioneers in seeking to achieve automatic conformity of the California income tax with the federal income tax system. He has served as Chair of both the Los Angeles County Bar and the Beverly Hills Bar Association Taxation Committees.
Dan was instrumental in the establishment of the State Bar Taxation Section of the California State Bar. He was influential in the development of the State Bar of California Board of Legalization. He was certified as a Taxation Law Specialist by the California State Bar.
Dan Olincy’s active service to the tax community includes significant contributions in the field of professional education. He has lectured on numerous subjects to the USC Tax Institute and the California Continuing Education of the Bar. He has written materials for various institutes and published articles in several publications including Major Tax Planning, the State Tax Bar Journal and the American Bar Association Journal.
His qualities of leadership and professional skills have enriched the lives and professional careers of his colleagues in the tax profession. He has brought to the profession dedication, creativity and spirited enthusiasm for excellence.
Christopher Poling
Advisory Board Member, General Counsel
Chris is an experienced and specialized attorney who practices in the areas of tax law, trusts and estates, probate, and nonprofit/charitable organizations. In addition, Chris acts as a fiduciary for many trusts, charitable trusts, business entities and charitable organizations. Chris is one of only a few hundred attorneys who is a California State Bar Board Certified Specialist in the area of Tax Law. Prior to launching his own practice, Chris worked as a partner at Olincy & Karpel where he worked closely with Dan Olincy before he retired. Dan Olincy is widely known as being one of the top tax attorneys in California and the Beverly Hills area. Dan Olincy is credited, along with two other attorneys, with starting the State Bar Tax Committee which is now known as the Tax Section of the California State Bar. Prior to joining Olincy & Karpel, Chris began his professional career at Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, one of the largest law firms in the country. At LBBS, Chris was an attorney in the Corporate Services and Tax practice group where he worked extensively with issues involving nonprofits, business entities, transactional law, and tax matters.
Chris did his undergraduate studies, and graduated from, UCLA. Subsequently, Chris obtained his law degree from the Pepperdine University School of Law and then passed the Bar Exam on his first attempt. Chris then went on to pursue additional, specialized legal training at Loyola Law School where he received his LL.M. (Master’s of Law) in the area of Taxation. Chris is a member of the California State Bar; Admitted to the U.S. Tax Court.
Chris is involved in the community and serves on the Board or as Trustee for several charitable organizations. Chris is the Co-Trustee of the Hans G. & Thordis Burkhardt Foundation. The Burkhardt Foundation was formed in 1994 by the renowned artist Hans G. Burkhardt in order to help aspiring artists and students of art pursue their dreams and education in the field. In addition, Chris is also a senior advisor to the W. Sherman Winseman Foundation. The W.S.W. Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that is very active in the community. It is widely known for its great work in assisting homeless veterans, the disabled, people struggling with autism, and other charitable ventures. Chris is also an avid sports and movie fan. While attending UCLA, Chris was a member of the football team as a runningback. Before attending law school, Chris worked as a stuntman for numerous football-related commercials and appears in the 2004 hit movie “Friday Night Lights.”
Grace Montoya
Acting Trustee and Chair of the Advisory Board
Grace Montoya joined the law firm of Olincy & Karpel in July of 2010. She became a paralegal in 2014, specializing in trust and estate administration as well as tax preparation. When coming to Olincy & Karpel, she brought with her over eighteen years of legal experience in civil litigation, corporate, estate planning and probate.
Upon Dan Olincy’s resignation as Trustee of the Andrew Norman Foundation, he felt that Grace was the right person to not only re-build but steer the Foundation in a new direction, with Christopher Poling as its General Counsel. Grace was also selected because of her passion and desire to fulfil ANF’s charitable purpose. In the past, Grace has worked with Corazaon De Vida, traveling to orphanages in Tijuana. She also worked with Turning Point Transitional Housing in Santa Monica, California by helping the homeless with personal needs. Grace has also been instrumental in projects with the Hans G. & Thordis Burkhardt Foundation, the Mandel Family Foundation, and the W.S. Winseman Foundation.
